Childrens Services Workshop

Please find below a brief overview of the contents of the Children's Services Workshop which will be presented by Brian Donnelly.

The Workshop will cover the difficulties surrounding provision of Complex, Specialist and Children’s Equipment; the impact this has on service delivery; the supply market, and how these types of equipment fit into it. I will also be discussing at length a proposal I made in Wales to implement a National Service to deal with these types of equipment, how this would work, and the potential benefits it would bring.

New Workshop Added!

A new workshop has been added to this year's programme entitled 'Improve Lives (And Save The Planet) with Social Enterprise' - Gary Wright, Divisional Director, Essex Equipment Service.
 
The workshop deals with how to save the planet and make your budget go further through recycling and retailing. The Workshop will also give structural and operational details from Essex, as an opening framework, and it will progress into a workshop piece including a session around practical steps needed to evaluate and implement this option. It will close with a question and answer session with the aim of leaving the participants with a good understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of a community led or publicly-owned trading model.

NAEP Conference 2010 Poster Exhibition

Time is running out for delegates and manufacturers to submit their poster applications. The NAEP Conference last year demonstrated, through the poster displays, the innovation that is out there through submissions by individual practitioners and organisations, so please let’s see this again this year.

Conference delegates will have a number of opportunities to view a display of posters that describe Community Equipment Service / projects that have been completed. This is an important opportunity to publicise your service, gain feedback on your ideas and share your experiences with others.

Delegates at the Conference will have the opportunity to vote for the best poster with an award being presented to the winner during the Conference. In addition it is our intention that abstracts accepted for poster presentation will be published on the NAEP website and in the NAEP Equipment Services Journal.

To have a poster accepted for this year’s Poster Exhibition, you must be a Conference Delegate – in addition, the Poster Exhibition is open to all our Exhibiting Companies at Conference 2010.  An abstract must be submitted which summarises the information you display in the poster. The NAEP Education Special Interest Group comprising of key members of the NAEP Regional Groups will review all abstracts.

NAEP Speaker to be Peoples Peer

NAEP Conference speaker Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson has been nominated as 'People's Peer'

Paralympic gold medallist Tanni Grey-Thompson is set to become a "people's peer" after a recommendation from the House of Lords Appointments Commission.

Dame Tanni is Britain's most successful Paralympian, with 11 Olympic golds for wheelchair racing, as well as seven golds in World Championships.

The Cardiff-born wheelchair racer has set 30 world records in her career.

She will be one of four new non-party-political peers recommended to the Prime Minister by the commission.

The others are Design Council chair, executive director of the Institute for Government and former Whitehall mandarin Sir Michael Bichard, Royal Opera House chief executive and former BBC journalist Tony Hall, and eminent surgeon Professor Ajay Kakkar.

Grey-Thompson was appointed a Dame of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005. She was appointed an MBE in 1993 and an OBE in 1999.

2009 NAEP Conference Review

Pick and mix order of the day as ‘hybrid’ becomes the new retail model buzzword

Just as the NAEP Conference was getting underway, a report from trouble torn Iran appeared on a news programme. The reporter, suggesting that the country was in a degree of turmoil used the expression, ‘The future is the land of guesswork’. In a way, that could sum up where we are with the TCES programme and the retail model. Things are happening, that’s for sure, but many of the things that are happening are resulting in different, new and unique solutions. So, lots to take in from a couple of days in Blackpool….

For the past couple of years the NAEP Conference has been dominated by the controversial and emotive TCES Retail Model debate and, although there was a definite attempt to move away from wall to wall TCES discussions and debate there can be no getting away from the fact that it's the one issue that most people want to talk about and learn more about.

The problem is that progress, at least for public consumption, is relatively slow and so both delegates and suppliers are left mulling over old issues and simply wondering what the end game will be.

That said, although there wasn’t anything that could be considered to be a eureka moment during the two day conference, there were a number of interesting and thought provoking issues at an event that was well run by the new organisers, Disability North.

You know what you’re going to get when you go to a NAEP Conference. The new organisers had resisted changing the event for the sake of change, which was a good plan. If it's not broken, then don't fix it. However, a couple of features had been added, such as a poster display and a new product award. The poster display was well supported, with quite a number of interesting offerings.

 In fact, one delegate expressed an opinion that the guts of the conference were displayed on the walls rather than being inside the conference room. His point was that the nitty gritty of how to do things, how to develop services and how to face the challenges ahead were contained in that area. It was also a reminder that, although the TCES retail model is the hot topic, throughout the UK Community Equipment Services are busy doing what they have been doing for years – getting the right products to people who need them.

The Keynote speech on the first morning came from Professor Heinz Wolff. Now 81, he wrote in his biography that “he intends to go on working until he officially goes gaga!”. The way he entertained the audience suggests that he still has some time to go before that happens.

Having said that, when he rolled off the list of pills he takes for this and that, he clearly is able to speak not just from an expert point of view, but also a ‘customer’ of the health services.

Innovative Product Showcase Winner
